PACER event offers opportunity to participate in “Special Education Day at the Capitol”

PACER Center is offering “Celebrating Differences, Protecting Rights: Special Education Day at the Capitol,” a free event for youth with disabilities, parents, and advocates. It is on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at the Minnesota History Center, Irvine Room, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, Minn. Preregistration is required.

This event is an opportunity to let state legislators know how important special education is to Minnesota. Participants will learn how to talk effectively with legislators, then go to the capitol where they will meet individually with their respective representatives and senators.

Attendees will learn about:

  • What happened in the 2009 legislative session
  • What issues are expected in the 2010 session
  • How to influence the legislative process
  • How to use the power of their personal story

They also may attend breakout sessions on topics such as bullying prevention legislation and more. Lunch will be provided.

To register, call PACER at 952-838-9000 or 952-838-0190 (TTY). In Greater Minnesota, call 800-537-2237 (toll free) or visit PACER.org.

PACER Center is a parent center for families of children and young adults with any disability. PACER provides individual assistance, workshops, publications, and other resources to help families make decisions about education and other services for their child or young adult with disabilities.
