PACER Center workshop addresses transition for young children with disabilities

PACER Center is offering “Everything You Need to Learn Before Your Child Turns 3,” a free workshop for parents of young children with disabilities. It is on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at PACER Center, 8161 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington, Minn. Advance registration is requested.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires states to provide certain services to eligible children with disabilities. Children up to age 3 receive early childhood services under Part C of IDEA. Children ages 3 to 5 receive preschool services under Part B. This free workshop will help parents understand the important aspects of transitioning from Part C to Part B services.

Participants will learn about:

  • The different criteria for Part C and Part B services
  • The transition from Part C to Part B services
  • Natural environments and least restrictive environments
  • Community-based options for services to support inclusion
  • Families’ rights within the special education process
  • The importance of writing  measurable goals and objectives

To register, call PACER at 952-838-9000 or 952-838-0190 (TTY). In Greater Minnesota, call 800-537-2237 (toll free) or visit PACER.org.
