RESPONSIBILITIES/ROLES
- Research and write clear, concise hard news articles and lively substantive feature articles for multiple newsletters and other publications.
- Conduct interviews and write with accuracy and speed about people’s personal experiences as well as complex legislative and public policy issues.
- Learn Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT (IDEA) and disability related content.
- Edit content, style, and design of newsletters, brochures, informational handouts, and other print material.
- Guide publications in thorough PACER review process. Participate in production planning and proofing.
- Contribute to respected state and national media relations through contacting media outlets, writing news releases, publicizing special events, providing reports with reliable sources and interacting with the press.
- Write and produce accurate, high-quality materials ranging from compelling video scripts, monthly e-newsletters, and public relations brochures to low-reading-level handouts, detailed reports on policy issues, and online material.
- Write foundation and corporate grants.
- Photograph individuals and events.
- Collaborate with PACER staff on conceptualizing and developing online and print publications
- Develop, write and post content for social media sites on a consistent (ie: daily or weekly) basis
- Market and promote PACER programs and materials
- Other duties as may be assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism
- Experience preferred in writing for newspapers or news-oriented periodicals
- Knowledge and experience in Associated Press style
- Knowledge of “family friendly” language
- Comfort in initiating contact with media and press about relevant topics
- Attend PACER workshops to learn content
- Occasional press related evening and weekend work
- Working knowledge of graphic design and print production
- Ability to manage several projects at once while adhering to deadlines
- Ability to adapt styles of writing to varied audiences
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Assertiveness in initiating new projects
- Ability to think creatively
- Ability to work independently as well as in team planning and decision-making
- Must have interpersonal skills that encourage cooperation when editing other writers’ work
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues experienced by persons with disabilities
