Parent Trainer and Advocate

POSITION: Parent Trainer and Advocate
SUPERVISOR: Jody Manning, Parent Training and Information Center Coordinator
STATUS: Full-time, Salaried Monthly, Exempt status

Responsibilities/Roles:

  1. Provide in-person and telephone assistance (information and guidance) to parents regarding special education procedures for school-age children with disabilities
  2. Develop and present workshops in communities throughout the state for parents of school age with disabilities and professionals who provide services.
  3. Assist in public information and education activities with presentations to various organizations and professional groups.
  4. Assist in data collection for evaluation reports and other diverse tasks.
  5. Research and write clear, informative materials on special education and closely related topics.
  6. Coordinate and conduct a parent mentor program.
  7. Other activities as required.

Experience/Background Skills:

  1. Ability to work well with others, and interest in relating to parents of children with disabilities.
  2. Experience in public speaking, workshop presentations, and assisting others on the telephone.
  3. Experience working with individuals in a guidance or counseling role.
  4. Extensive experience and background in research and writing.
  5. Knowledge of laws and rules related to the education of school-age children with disabilities.
  6. Ability to keep good records and collect data for evaluation purposes.
  7. Ability to provide own transportation and flexibility to travel. Workshops are presented during both day time and evening hours, therefore, flexible schedule needed.
  8. Experience in community service/human service/social service.
  9. Ability to work with diverse populations.
  10. College degree or equivalent background gained through training or work experience.
  11. Supervisory experience helpful.
  12. Excellent organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines.

Minimum Requirements:

College degree, preferably in related field.

Salary: To be determined based on experience.
