Tips for Lowering the Cost of Doctor Visits

  • When you schedule the appointment, ask the receptionist or the billing department if you might be eligible for a reduced cost or sliding fee scale program. Some clinics also have discounts if you pay the day of your appointment.
  • If you suddenly lose your insurance or your benefits significantly change, ask the receptionist or billing department at your current doctor’s office if they have policies or programs that may help reduce your health care costs.
  • Prices for physicals and other basic doctor appointments vary between clinics even if you qualify for reduced prices or a sliding fee scale. Call the billing department or speak to the receptionist to compare prices at a few clinics before going to an appointment.

Reduced Cost & Sliding Fee Medical Providers for Families & Children

If you receive medical insurance or services through a Minnesota Health Care program (MA, TEFRA, MinnesotaCare), you can find a complete list of medical providers who accept public insurance through the DHS Provider Directory.

Below is a list of medical providers who offer reduced cost or sliding fee scale programs. Sliding fee scales usually reduce the cost of your medical bills relative to monthly income, size of household, or a combination of both. Often to apply for these programs, you will need to ask the receptionist or the billing department for an application, and most programs have eligibility requirements. If the medical clinic you wish to go to is not listed below, you can call and ask the clinic if they provide reduced or sliding fee scales for their services.

If you already have outstanding medical bills, work with your medical provider’s billing department to see how you can lower the cost of your bills.

The list is not all inclusive of medical providers within Minnesota that offer reduced costs or sliding fee scales. You can search for a clinic close to you by your city name. Click on the letter of the alphabet for the first letter of your city name. If there are no medical providers within your city, search for medical providers in nearby cities.
