How Does Knowing Laws Help Me?

  • Knowledge of laws helps me gain a better understanding about my rights and privileges. For example, Disability Act-1995 (Equal Opportunity Protection of Rights & Full Participation) gives individuals with disabilities, “Access to free education in an appropriate environment till he attains the age of 18 years.”
  • Passing of laws directly or indirectly affects me. Knowing the law helps me advocate for services for my family, my children or myself, which should be provided by the country, state and or community in which I live.
  • I can prevent infringement of my rights and privileges by knowing what the law states.
  • I can also avail of concessions, benefits, and schemes entitled to me by law. For example, I can avail of income tax concessions under section 80DD by the Finance Act, 2003.
  • Being aware of laws helps me judge whether a law needs further review to uphold what is written in our Constitution. It empowers me to shape future laws and policies in our country for the well-being of my fellow countrymen.
