National Institutes

The National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH)

National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The Web site gives information on academic courses offered at Secundrabad and their regional centers. Information on schemes for people with disabilities and their families such as life insurance, concessions in income tax, and rail concessions can be accessed. Information on action taken towards inclusion and a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities is also given. Annual reports can be downloaded and links to the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, and the Rehabilitation Council of India are also available on their home page.

National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped Calcutta

For promoting, education, training and rehabilitation of the handicapped. The National Institute for Orthopaedically Handicapped Calcutta is for children and adults suffering from a wide range of disabilities, which limit their mobility, muscular coordination, and manipulative ability. Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, MUMBAI

On August 9, 1983, the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped was established in Mumbai. It exists to:

  • conduct, sponsor, coordinate & subsidize research for the education and rehabilitation of the hearing handicapped
  • undertake, sponsor, coordinate or subsidize research for biomedical engineering, resulting in the effective evaluation of aids, surgical or medical procedures or the development of new aids
  • undertake or sponsor programs for trainees and teachers, employment officers, psychologists, vocational counsellors and such other personnel as may be deemed necessary by the Institute for promoting education, training and rehabilitation of the hearing handicapped
  • distribute, promote, or subsidize the manufacture of prototypes and distribution of any, or all aids, designed to promote the education, rehabilitation or therapy of the hearing handicapped

The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped

An autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice, the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped offers long-term and short-term training courses, training in orientation, and mobility instruction. The Web site provides information on current research work carried out at the Institute; services provided, such as the school for students with visual impairment; vocational training; and the manufacture of Braille appliances. It also lists a brief description of the Institute’s library  and contact information for the regional centers and chapters. The Hindi alphabet in Braille is also on the web site.

Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO)

A nonprofit organization, working under the aegis of Govt. of India, under the ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. It was incorporated in 1972 to manufacture and supply artificial limb components and rehabilitation aids for the benefit of the physically handicapped. It started production in 1976.

District Rehabilitation Centers

The Government of India launched the District Rehabilitation Centre Scheme in early 1995 to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services to the rural disabled right at their door steps.

The scheme, at present, is operational at 11 different districts of the 10 states of our country. The services provided in the scheme include:

  • Prevention and early detection
  • Medical intervention and surgical correction
  • Fitment of artificial limbs, aids and appliances
  • Therapeutic services
  • Training for acquiring vocational training, job placement etc.

Regional Rehabilitation Centres for Persons with Spinal Injuries and other Orthopaedic Disabilities

There are four Regional Rehabilitation Centres for Persons with Spinal Injuries and other Orthopedics Disabilities in the country. These Centres provide facilities for treatment and rehabilitation services to the spinally injured and persons with other orthopaedic disabilities.

Composite Rehabilitation Centers

The basic objective of setting up Composite Resource Centres (CRCs) is to create the infrastructure required for training and manpower development, research, and providing services to persons with disabilities, particularly in those parts of the country where much infrastructure is lacking at present.

District Disability Rehabilitation Centers

The District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) is a nationwide program of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The objective of the program is to provide total rehabilitation to all the persons with disabilities at the District Centre itself. District Centres are being established in collaboration with the state governments by the National Institutes, DRCs and ALIMCO.

National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities

The National Trust is a statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, set up under the "National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities" Act (Act 44 of 1999). The site has details about its initiatives, guardianship and registration forms for guardianship. It also lists contact information of registered organizations in each state.

Rehabilitation Council Of India

Set up in 1986 under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the RCI goals are to maintain uniform standards of training of professionals. Professionals working in the field of disabilities need to be registered with RCI in order to work in the field of disabilities. Other goals of the organization are promoting research in the area of rehabilitation and special education.

The Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities

The Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities presents information about disabilities in India. Also available are publications on “Planning a Barrier-Free Environment,” the Commissioner’s annual report and details about the Persons with Disabilities Act. In addition, information on achievements, new initiatives, education, and the list of identified jobs are also available.

National Centre for the Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP)

Designed to be accessible to people with visual impairments using screen readers, this Web site gives information on issues pertaining to disabilities in the areas of access, communication, public policy, education and employment. Links to articles as well as current events in these five areas are given. The site also provides links to directories with contact information of Disability Commissioners in participating states, as well as directories of lawyers, architects and designers, and manufacturers of assistive devices.

Social Welfare Department

The social welfare department provides information in the areas of child welfare, women’s welfare, old age, people with disabilities, drug addiction and probation services. Information on statutory and non-statutory institutions by the welfare department is given. Also available are statistical information and reports on birth rate, literacy, and education in India. State policies on senior citizens, the juvenile justice act, Dowry Prohibition Act, immoral traffic act and the Bombay Beggary Prevention Act can be downloaded.

National Council for Education Research and Training

Established in 1961, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) assists the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and Departments of Education in States/ Union Territories in formulation and implementation of policies and major programs in the field of education, particularly for qualitative improvement of school education. The Web site has information on initiatives to reform school curriculum, educational surveys in each state, girls' education, value education, inclusive education and the national talent search. Details on publications by NCERT are available and journal publications by the organization can be downloaded.

National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation

The National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) was established by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 1997. Its objectives are to promote economic development, self-employment, and to give loans to persons with disabilities. The site has information of various schemes implemented through state agencies and nationalized banks, micro-financing schemes as well as achievements by state agencies and non-government organizations. Also available is the loan application form for various schemes in PDF format.
