Minnesota Parent Involvement Week Sept. 14-20 stresses parent's role in student achievement
When parents are involved in their child’s education, everyone’s a winner. Students are more successful, schools improve, and the entire community benefits.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has declared Sept. 14-20 as Minnesota Parent Involvement Week, a time to celebrate the powerful role parents play in their children’s education with activities at schools statewide.
Sponsored by the Minnesota Parent Center, Minnesota’s PIRC (Parental Information and Resource Center); and cosponsored by the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota Association of School Administrators, Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals, Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association, and Minnesota PTA, the week highlights the importance of parent involvement with a variety of special school activities including school tours, game nights, and other events.
Why is parent involvement in education important?
- Research shows that students learn more, have higher grades, and have better school attendance when parents are involved.
- When families take an active interest in what children are learning, students display a more positive attitude toward school and behave better both in and out of school.
- Student achievement increases when families and schools work together in true partnership.
Parents can check with their local school district to learn about scheduled parent involvement events and visit the Minnesota Parent Center Web site at www.PACER.org/mpc for ways every parent can be involved.
