Parents Are Invited to Dec. 3 Hearing on Proposed Permanent Rules Relating to Special Ed

Parents of children with disabilities are invited to attend and present their views at the Minnesota Department of Education’s (MDE) Dec. 3 hearing where permanent revision of state special education rules will be addressed. MDE is revising the rules in order to align them with requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004). Areas of important change include behavior and eligibility criteria for specific learning disability. The proposed rules are at http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/Legislation/Rulemaking/032655. PACER Center is reviewing the proposed rules and will participate in the hearing.

Parent Centers United for Excellence: ALLIANCE National Conference is Jan. 30 – Feb. 1

The 11th annual ALLIANCE National Conference will bring together representatives from parent centers, the U.S. Department of Education, technical assistance centers, and schools to share information about special education issues and working with families. The conference, in Washington D.C., is sponsored by the Technical Assistance ALLIANCE for Parent Centers National Center at PACER, in collaboration with the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the ALLIANCE Regional Parent Technical Assistance Centers. Registration deadline is Dec. 5.

New PACER Project to Increase Effectiveness of Special Education Advisory Councils

PACER Center announces a new statewide project to increase the effectiveness of local special education advisory councils (SEACs). PACER will develop and publicize a Web page of centralized, user-friendly SEAC information, training, and support. The project is funded by a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education. Seventh Annual Inclusive Schools Week Is Dec. 3 – 7

With a theme of “Lessons from the World: Including All Children,” this year’s national event celebrates international efforts to improve educational outcomes for all children, especially those with disabilities and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The event benefits children with disabilities and their families through more than 30 programs at PACER.

Educating Your Child with an Emotional or Behavioral Disorder (EBD) explains how children and adolescents with emotional disturbance can obtain services and supports to succeed in school environments, including the regular classroom, and how parents can use positive communication skills in developing partnerships between home and school.
Housing: Where Will Our Children Live When They Grow Up? is an attractive, easy-to-use book that includes a resource directory and answers to many parents' questions about future housing choices for their children with disabilities.
