EXploring Interests in Technology and Engineering (EX.I.T.E.) Internship Program
The EX.I.T.E. Internship Program was created for girls with disabilities such as LD, ADHD, ADD, Vision, Hearing, or Speech Impairments that are entered 10th and 11th grade and who had potential for exploring and attending post-secondary education
The mission of this innovative internship program was to open doors of opportunity for girls with disabilities to careers in science, technology, engineering, math, and related fields.
The EX.I.T.E. Internship program goals were:
- To provide training and activities for leadership skill development that will relate to the intern's success in planning for post-secondary education and careers.
- To prepare interns for leadership roles in science, technology, engineering, and math careers.
- To encourage knowledge and skills required to research post-secondary options and complete admissions and scholarships requirements.
- To explore an interested career through a job shadow opportunity.
Interns engaged in interactive workshops on design and construction, career exploration, science hands-on, forensic science, and job shadow preparation in order to enhance their skills and knowledge base in the science and technology fields. They also toured colleges in the Twin Cities area and participated in a one-day job shadow experience that related to their career interests.
The EX.I.T.E. Internship program was created to be a replicable model. This program is not currently active at PACER Center; however, information on this model is available.
The EX.I.T.E. Interns will have broadened their knowledge and interest in STEM and left the program with a portfolio of new experiences, better leadership and self-advocacy skills to prepare them for the transition to post secondary education and career choices.
