The statistics on this slide come from the 1996 National Longitudinal Transition Study (a second longitudinal study of more recent outcomes is currently underway). These discouraging figures continue into adulthood and employment for people with disabilities. The NOD and Harris Survey of 2000 found that more than two-thirds of working-age individuals with disabilities were unemployed.
While it's difficult to start off with these statistics, parents need to know what they are facing. The information presented in this curriculum will help to educate parents about what does work and what supports are available for their youth after high school. However, to maintain a positive approach to the issue, presenters should emphasize that scientifically based research has identified transition practices that lead to successful outcomes for youth with disabilities. The next slide offers specific information on what does work for youth.
