Helping Families Prepare for the Future

Information Meets Individual Needs

RSA Parent Information and Training Programs are called on to provide information on a wide range of issues. As students mature, each begins to forge their own unique path towards the future. Each student receiving transition services as part of their Individualized Educational Program (IEP) sets their own goals for what comes next. Depending on each child’s strengths, preferences, and interests, transition plans may focus on preparing for postsecondary education, employment, or other post-school adult living objectives.

Likewise every individual with a disability who qualifies for and receives vocational rehabilitation (VR) services creates an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). An individual’s employment goal must also be "consistent with the strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities, interests, and informed choice of the individual." The responses provided by parents to the question below demonstrates that families have turned to the RSA Parent Information and Training Programs in their states for expertise on a wide range of issues beyond the scope special education services.

  • 56% of parents attending workshops received information to help their son or daughter prepare for EMPLOYMENT
  • 42% of parents received information to help their son or daughter prepare for POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION
  • 53% of parents received information to help their son or daughter with INDEPENDENT LIVING
