Helping Families Prepare for the Future
RSA Programs Help Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families
First authorized in the 1992 Amendments to the Rehabilitation Act, the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) has since funded Parent Information and Training Programs in 25 states. Grants have been from three to five years in length. Program activities provide information and training to individuals with disabilities, their families, and the professionals who work with them.
Through workshops, publications, and individual assistance, program resources focus on helping individuals with disabilities and their family members to understand and access the vocational rehabilitation and statewide workforce investment systems, and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to become active decision-makers in the process. Most programs have focused on helping families prepare their youth with disabilities for the transition from special education to successful post-school employment, postsecondary education, and community living.
RSA Parent Information and Training Programs help individuals with disabilities and their families:
- better understand vocational rehabilitation and independent living programs and services
- communicate more effectively with transition and rehabilitation personnel and other relevant professionals
- develop an individualized plan for employment
- understand relevant sections of the Rehabilitation Act
