Ages of Youth Served: Transition and Beyond

RSA Parent Information and Training Programs serve youth in middle school, high school, and beyond. Slightly more than one fourth (27%) of those served are aged 12 to 14. About half of those served (48%) are high school age. These are the "transition planning years" when students, educators and family, focus more intensely on preparing youth for what comes next: "post-secondary education, vocational education, integrated employment (including supported employment), continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living, or community participation" (IDEA 2004).

Ages served: ages 12-14=27%, ages 15-18=48%, ages beyond high school=25%Young adults with disabilities and their families turn to RSA funded Parent Information and Training Programs for assistance in these areas after they graduate from high school, or age out of special education programs as well.

Fully one-fourth (25%) of individuals with disabilities served by the programs are over the age of 18.
