A How-To Kit About Helping Yourself and Others
PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center created the Speak Up About Speaking Up Kit, with support from Infinite Campus Foundation, to provide free, ready-to-use resources for educators, counselors, and youth leaders. The kit can be used year-round with students of all ages to help them learn and practice the lifelong skills of self-advocacy and advocating for others.
Handout: Why Advocacy Matters
All children and teens should know that they can create positive change in their world.
- Self-advocacy helps youth recognize and communicate their needs, develop problem-solving skills, and seek support from trusted adults when needed.
- Advocacy for others builds empathy and a sense of community, empowering students to speak up and take action when they see someone else in need of support.
This printable handout introduces the importance of advocacy as a foundational life skill.

About the Campaign
The Speak Up About Speaking Up Kit is designed to empower children, teens, and young adults – with and without disabilities – with skills they can use in every area of life: school, health, relationships, and beyond.
Self-advocacy and advocacy are part of the social-emotional skill set that prepares youth to:
- Address bullying situations
- Communicate education or health needs
- Navigate social interactions
- Contribute positively to their communities
By teaching these skills, educators can help students build confidence and resilience, while fostering inclusive and supportive environments.
