IBM Offers Activity Kits to Help Adults Address Internet Safety for Children

It can be challenging for parents and educators to help children understand how to stay safe on the Internet, but IBM is now offering Activity Kits to help address the issue. The kits provide everything presenters need to conduct a volunteer activity at a school or community organization, including step-by-step instructions and supporting materials such as presentations. Activity kit topics include the dangers and signs of cyberbullying, Internet safety coaching for kids, and how to help teens control their online identity.

U.S. Rep. Mike Honda released a statement yesterday in support of National Bullying Prevention Month and the National Bullying Prevention Center's resources. Honda, who represents California's 15th congressional district which encompasses western San Jose and Silicon Valley, was bullied as a child and was an educator for 30 years. New “Spookley” Teacher Toolkit Helps Early Learners Prevent Bullying

PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center is partnering with the publishers of “The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin” to provide the wonderful new online toolkit, “Stop Bullying Before It Starts.”  This helpful digital resource (preschool and K-3) provides links to free tools that can be used in the classroom, including discussion guidelines, learning activities, and multi-subject learning examples. It’s a great way to help young children discover how to prevent bullying.

HHS Secretary praises National Bullying Prevention Center

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius praised PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center as she addressed the 2012 Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Summit Aug. 6 in Washington, D.C., highlighting that bullying is a serious national challenge requiring a true national response.

“The Department of Education worked with state departments of education and local school boards to collect better data and develop anti-bullying policies. And we saw private campaigns and non-profit institutions step up like PACER’s National Center for Bullying Prevention,” Sebelius said. Read the full speech here.

Minnesota Task Force completes report on school bullying

Minnesota's Task Force on the Prevention of School Bullying sent its final report to Governor Mark Dayton's office Wednesday, Aug. 1. The Task Force, co-chaired by Julie Hertzog, the director of PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center, was created to examine the state of bullying, harassment, and intimidation in Minnesota schools, including existing laws and regulations. 

Co-Chairs Julie Hertzog and Walter Roberts released the following statement: “It was an honor to lead such an important effort on behalf of Minnesota youth. We thank our fellow Task Force Members for their extraordinary commitment of time and expertise, and Governor Dayton for his leadership and foresight in establishing this Task Force. We especially want to thank every Minnesotan who showed up at a listening session or a public meeting – especially the young people who shared their compelling stories.We look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature to ensure these recommendations are not only implemented, but have the backing necessary to keep our schools safe and welcoming places to learn.”
