How do I request a special education evaluation for my child (birth to age three)?

What should parents do?

If you, your child’s physician, or other professional has noticed that your child is not developing as expected, you can request a free screening by contacting Help Me Grow. Help Me Grow is a state-wide referral source that provides information and resources for families and professionals in Minnesota who have concerns about a child’s development. You can call 1-866-693-GROW (4769) or contact Help Me Grow online.

This process determines whether your child is eligible for early intervention services. Early Intervention is what special education is called for children birth to age three.

How does the system work?

An early intervention representative from your school district will be contacted after a referral has been made. An intake person will then contact you to discuss your concerns within two working days. Next, you may be offered either a free screening or an evaluation. If the screening determines that your child shows delays, you will be offered an evaluation at no cost. If your child is found to be eligible for early intervention after the evaluation and assessments are completed, an Individual Family Service Plan (ISFP) will be created that lists what supports and services your family will receive.

What if my child is not eligible?

You may be referred to other resources for information, services, and support for your child. The evaluation team may suggest a follow-up to determine if your child qualifies for services in the future. You know your child best and can always ask about additional resources or request a follow-up.
