What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is any device, tool, app, or other product that helps a person with a disability do something they otherwise couldn’t do. AT can help people with disabilities be more independent at home, school, work, and in the community.

What are examples of assistive technology?

Assistive technology ranges from simple to complex. Some examples are:

  • A crayon with a foam grip to help a young child write or color
  • A high-tech communication device that can speak for someone who is unable to talk
  • A phone app that reminds a person to take their medication or study for a test
  • A visual schedule to help a child transition between classroom activities

Who can benefit from assistive technology?

Almost anyone with a disability can benefit from assistive technology. It is not limited by age or type of disability. AT can help with:

  • Daily routines
  • Social skills and behavior
  • Sensory needs
  • Fine or large motor skills
  • Communication
  • Reading and writing
  • Technology access

How do I start if I think my child needs assistive technology?

If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan, ask their case manager at school. You can also contact PACER Center to talk to a parent advocate or assistive technology specialist.
