How do I decide which assistive technology is best for my child?

Assistive technology (AT) includes a wide range of low- to high-tech tools and programs that can help your child be more independent. There are many options, and it can be hard to know where to begin. Here are some tips to get started.

Talk to professionals with AT knowledge

If your child is already receiving special education services, let their case manager know you are interested in exploring AT that could help them learn. Specialists such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists may also have ideas of AT to help with different tasks.

Think about your child’s struggles and successes

Make a list of your child’s strengths and challenges. For example, do they have difficulty reading, following directions, or typing on a keyboard? Do they struggle both at home and school? What activities do they enjoy the most? AT is most effective when it is based on your child’s unique needs.

Don’t be afraid to try!

Assistive technology is not one-size-fits-all. There are different programs available to help your child try different options before deciding what would be most beneficial:

  • PACER’s Simon Technology Center: PACER’s AT Lending Library has more than 1,500 items that Minnesota families can check out for free. You can also schedule a consultation, which is a personalized exploration of AT tools to help your child.
  • STAR program: The state of Minnesota has a program called STAR which offers an additional collection of AT devices available for loan.
  • Local school district: Some school districts have their own collection of AT you can try on a temporary basis.

When your child is trying an AT device or program, pay attention to any changes. For example, is the quality of their work improving, can they complete tasks more quickly, or are they getting less frustrated? This can help you determine whether you have found the right AT for your child.

Assistive technology has the potential to help your child do more than you ever thought possible.
