WA Newport Heights Elementary School During this whole month we teach the Second Step Bullying Prevention Units in all K-5th classrooms. To prep for Unity Day our Kindness leaders made orange posters sharing messages of kindness & inclusion. We have a Kindness tree up in our main hallway. Each classroom was given maple leaves to decorate with words of kindness and inclusion and no bullying messages. On Oct. 23rd, students will sign the NHE UNITY poster when they arrive at school, this poster will hang in the school for the duration of the school year. We all wear ORANGE! We have a Unity assembly in the morning. We will discuss our two books that were read by classroom teachers and had text dependent questions. "One Kindness" K-2nd, and "The Invisible Boy," 3rd-5th. We will watch a short inclusion video and then the Kindness leaders will lead the students in a discussion about kindness and inclusion. Our students and staff will sing our school song.
WA Bellevue School District Our School Board made a formal proclamation for Unity Day. Our central office will have a Unity Day Photo Booth and use the #BSDUnited tag as well as tagging PACER. Also at our central office, we asked for staff to nominate a colleague that shows kindness, acceptance and inclusion. We had over 35 nominations and selected 10 to win Unity Day t-shirts. We are having a United Walk in our neighboring Botanical Gardens during lunch (with orange umbrellas--we do live in Pacific Northwest). Many of our schools are celebrating Unity Day --or Week-- which include daily dares around kindness, signing a public poster to stand United against Bullying, or having assemblies. In addition, we have reached out to various landmarks asking them to "go Orange" on Wednesday. One of our floating bridges agreed to be Orange! Keep your fingers crossed for the Space Needle, The Great Wheel, SeaTac Airport and more!
